Radio Hall of Fame
Attention: Bruce DuMont, Founder/President & CEO
Dear Mr. DuMont:
There is still time to reverse the reckless and irresponsible decision to honor Focus on the Family’s James Dobson in the Radio Hall of Fame. Dobson has built his career on the backs of gay and lesbian people, injected invective into the political arena and dishonored the broadcasting profession by brazenly distorting research.
Mr. DuMont, I believe that character counts, and a member of the Radio Hall of Fame should have a career based on honesty and integrity. Dobson fails to meet this test and it is inexplicable that you would reward Dobson, given his reprehensible record.
For example, Dobson told The Daily Oklahoman on Oct. 23, 2004 that, “Homosexuals are not monogamous. They want to destroy the institution of marriage. It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth.” Dobson also told the Daily Oklahoman that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is “a God’s people hater. I don’t know if he hates God, but he hates God’s people.”
Dobson’s ugly rhetoric is so polarizing that former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) said that, “Dobson and his gang of thugs are real nasty bullies.” Focus on the Family co-founder Gil Alexander Moegerle said that, “I believe Dobson-style politics have been inept, simplistic, exclusionary, divisive and alarmingly sectarian…James Dobson’s political style has been one of relentlessly demonizing his adversaries.”
It is unconscionable that you are rewarding this mean-spirited demagogue and giving your imprimatur to his divisive and discriminatory behavior. By doing so, the Radio Hall of Fame is surrendering its credibility and revealing itself as an institution that lacks basic standards of respect and common decency.
You should also know that Dobson has profited from his intolerance. He founded a ministry, Love Won Out, that promises to “cure” homosexuals — even though the so-called “ex-gay” leader of Love Won Out, John Paulk, was photographed in a gay bar. Dobson also continues to promote dishonest psychological theories about gay people that are rejected by every respected medical and mental health association in America, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association.
Finally, it is an understatement to say that James Dobson is truth challenged. In the past two years, at least seven researchers in three countries have accused Dobson of manipulating or cherry picking their results to back his anti-gay teachings. A full list of letters and videos documenting the accusations of these respected scientists can be viewed at RespectMyResearch.org.
Dumping Dobson is not a matter of left vs. right, but right vs. wrong. I implore you to strongly reconsider this poor decision that dishonors both the Radio Hall of Fame and the broadcasting profession. What next, will you honor the late Father Charles Coughlin because he had a weekly audience of more than 40 million listeners?
The Radio Hall of Fame’s credibility is at stake and I urge you to act swiftly. Reversing course is the moral and ethical decision and it also makes good business sense.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen
